How does Intelligent Employment work?

Whether you’re an SME with no in-house HR, a growing people team, or a large employer with an established HR function, Intelligent Employment is designed to work how you need it to.

We bridge the gap between HR and traditional legal support. We’re not just here for you when things get serious, we’re here to help you take the right steps when it matters most: early. Because the earlier issues are dealt with, the more options available to you and the less they’ll cost you later.

Intelligent Employment gives you direct access to experienced employment lawyers who understand your business, your challenges, and what a good outcome looks like.

We’ll support you with:

  • A dedicated team – you’ll work with the same lawyers who get to know your organisation inside out
  • Commercial approach – we start with your desired outcome, assess risk, and tell you what we’d do in your shoes
  • Legally privileged advice – speak openly, act confidently, reduce exposure
  • Clear service standards – fast, reliable responses when you need them most

They call exactly at the time they say they will and their advice is always clear, with no legal bulls**t!

Frequently asked questions

Will I really work with dedicated employment lawyers?

Yes. Every Intelligent Employment client is assigned two dedicated employment lawyers.

You’ll have one primary lawyer who gets to know your organisation, your people and the way you like to work. Alongside them, you’ll also have a dedicated buddy lawyer who works in the background, ensuring you continue to receive consistent advice during holidays, sickness or other absences.

That means no repeating your story to different advisers, no call centre approach, and no being passed from person to person. Just employment lawyers who genuinely understand your organisation.

Is the advice really unlimited?

Absolutely! Intelligent Employment is built around giving you the confidence to ask questions early, before they become expensive problems.

Whether you need support with performance, absence, disciplinary issues, grievances, flexible working, discrimination, family-friendly rights, probation periods or individual redundancy processes, you can contact us as often as you need without worrying about additional charges.

No watching the clock. No surprise invoices. Just fixed-fee employment law advice whenever you need it.

What’s included in the service, and what’s not?

Intelligent Employment is designed to cover the employment law and employee relations issues that organisations deal with every day.

To keep the service cost-effective, we don’t build the price around larger, specialist project work that many organisations may never need, such as collective consultation exercises or defending employment tribunal claims.

If something outside the scope does arise, we’ll always provide an initial steer and explain your options before recommending whether separate support is needed. We don’t use exclusions as an excuse to generate additional fees, we simply believe it’s fairer that clients only pay for specialist work if and when they genuinely need it.

How long is the agreement?

Our standard agreement is a rolling 12-month contract, giving us time to understand your organisation and deliver real value.

If you’re looking for longer-term certainty, we can also offer fixed agreements for up to four years.

Unlike many providers, we don’t believe in locking clients into lengthy notice periods. That’s why we only require 30 days’ notice if you decide the service is no longer right for your organisation. We believe we should earn your trust and partnership through the quality of our support, not restrictive contracts.

Is legal expenses insurance included?

As a regulated law firm, Halborns carries comprehensive professional indemnity insurance, giving you confidence that you’re receiving advice from qualified employment lawyers.

Unlike some providers, we don’t automatically bundle legal expenses insurance into Intelligent Employment. In our experience, insurance-backed advice can sometimes become overly cautious or driven by an insurer’s requirements rather than what’s commercially right for your organisation.

Instead, we focus on helping you avoid employment tribunal claims in the first place by providing practical, commercially focused advice at the earliest opportunity. In fact, for years, not one of our Intelligent Employment clients has paid compensation at an employment tribunal.

If legal expenses insurance is something you’re interested in, we’ll happily discuss the options with you. Many organisations already have suitable cover included within existing business insurance policies, such as Directors’ and Officers’ Liability Insurance.
